Joseph Mahowald, lyric-baritone, recently closed on broadway in Boublil & Schonberg's “The Pirate Queen." He starred on Broadway in the title roles of Jekyll and Hyde, Javert and Enjolras in Les Miz and he originated the role of Aaron James in Mike Reid's opera, Different Fields commissioned by The Metropolitan Opera Guild. He also created the roles of Ace Gruver in Tony Award-winning William Luce's Sayonara and Captain Phoebus in Dennis DeYoung's (Styxx) adaptation of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Off-Broadway he appeared as Hendon in the Prince and the Pauper, The Aviator in The Little Prince and Haemon in Antigone. On national tours, Joe appeared as Javert in Les Miz, Lancelot in Camelot with Stacy Keach, as featured soloist in A Grand Night for Singing and Ace Gruver in Sayonara.
Joe has recorded 3 CD's including Wonderful Words of Life, his first solo cd, Sondheim Tonight, recorded with the City of London Philharmonic, benefitting the Alan Jay Lerner fund for research into Cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital, and Scattered Thoughts benefitting The Lord's Pantry in New York City. He's also recorded dozens of “backers tapes” for new musicals.
Some of his extensive regional credits include leading roles in: Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Elephant Man, To Kill A Mockingbird and Christmas Memories (for which he won the “Dare First-Night Award for Best Actor”) at Tennessee Repertory Theatre in Nashville; The Merry Widow, Brigadoon and Camelot at Paper Mill Playhouse (the State Theater of New Jersey); Chess, Sweeney Todd, Camelot, Cinderella, Desert Song, Into The Woods and 1776 at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera; Some Sweet Day at Goodspeed Opera Co.; Carousel, Gigi and Christmas Voyager at Westchester Broadway Theatre; Sayonara and 1776 at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater; Assassins with Players Theatre - Columbus; Showboat and West Side Story directed by Terrence Mann at North Carolina Theatre; and Kiss Me Kate at the Augusta Opera Co.
